About Agape – From the Heart
About Agape
Do you know what passion is? Something you can truly believe in.
My passion is that every person is seen and given a second chance.
I believe deeply in caring for one another. Especially in times like these, that may be the most important calling we have as humanity.
When I was twelve years old, I felt a growing desire to help the most vulnerable. From that moment on, my path slowly began to unfold.
Through my professional experience in Dutch prisons and as a manager, coach, and (project) coordinator—working together with the Dutch government and other organizations—I was shaped into a dedicated expert in my field.
At a certain point, I felt called to broaden my horizon and continue my mission in Mexico City, with the goal of supporting the most vulnerable.
That is why Foundation Agape was established:
- To set prisoners free—both spiritually and practically.
- To bring hope through words and actions.
At this moment, we are actively present inside the prisons of Mexico City. The prisons here are extremely poor, and the Mexican justice system is complicated, leaving many prisoners feeling trapped in a hopeless, dark tunnel.

Who is Mirjam van der Vliet?
A young woman with a mission and a passion to support the most vulnerable.
I grew up surrounded by strong, resilient parents who taught me how to find joy even in difficult times. Their example shapes my life today, as a professional, wife, and volunteer.
Family and friendship are central in my life. As a wife, sister, daughter, and friend, I understand the importance and complexity of building, maintaining, and navigating a life through transitions, challenges, and joys. I live in Mexico City with my husband, surrounded by a wonderful community.
Agape means love that does not give up. That love is our motivation.
Our mission is to support and guide the most vulnerable—especially people in Mexican prisons—towards a new future full of hope and perspective.
Our vision is to be a movement of love in action: breaking chains, restoring hope, and offering second chances to those who are often forgotten by society.
We believe that small acts done with a big heart can change lives.
- Christian foundation – Agape is rooted in Christian values, where unconditional love is central. We believe in grace, forgiveness, and second chances.
- Human dignity – Every person is valuable, regardless of their past.
- Practical and spiritual support – We not only bring words, but also concrete help in daily needs.
- Connection – We work together with local and international partners, because change happens in unity.

"Mirjam is a passionate woman, fully committed to her calling! I know better than anyone how important it is to support people like her, called to serve a specific group. Alone we can’t do it, but together we are strong." - Treasurer – Paul Faber-place photo from Paul Faber
"Looking at my family and our home, I am grateful for all that God has given us. This makes me realize how vulnerable some people are, such as those in prison. That’s why I support Agape with faith and compassion."
- Overcrowding: Many prisons operate far above capacity, creating harsh living conditions.
- Corruption: Prison staff are often complicit in criminal activities inside the walls, including drug trafficking and violence.
- Drug cartel influence: Prisoners affiliated with cartels sometimes have access to weapons, phones, and drugs, creating serious security issues.
- Famous “La Tolva”: Known for extreme violence; even staff can struggle to maintain control.
- VIP prisoners: Wealthy or influential inmates may enjoy better cells and privileges.
- Self-managed prisons: Some prisons operate under inmate-led systems, leading to violent confrontations.
- Family contact: Access to family varies; some prisoners have regular visits, while others face strict restrictions.
- Human rights issues: Poor sanitation, violence, and abuse by staff are widespread. International organizations like Amnesty International regularly highlight these problems.
Agape believes in restoration through love, faith, and hope, building change inside and outside the prison walls.
